Juan Uslé: Luz Aislada

Spanish born painter Juan Uslé, 42, will have the first exhibition that presents an overview of his photographs from 1977 to 1997, opening at Cheim & Read on the 11th of April, 1997.

Uslé's photographs - shown here with his paintings - represent an oeuvre which the artist has consistently pursued over a period of twenty years.  The photographs should be understood as a medium of artistic expression complementing his painterly abstractions, which he began in 1980 in a radical non-figurative style.  Of these works Uslé comments, "With this other eye,  I paused to revisit and explore those spaces that exist in between things; those anonymous places among the shadows of means - known and unknown.  Light that is unstable and distinct to the extent that it becomes the solitary protagonist of these images."

Uslé 's photographs have never before been featured in a one-person show, except in the recent museum exhibition of his recent paintings from 1986 through 1997 at the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno in Valencia, Spain (IVAM). 

 In the years from 1988 through 1995, Uslé has extensively shown his paintings in New York.  He was included in significant group paintings exhibitions in France, Great Britain, Germany, and Spain.  A forthcoming exhibition is being organized for 1998-99 - a major museum tour of several venues in Western Europe by the Center for Curatorial Studies (CURST) at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany.  In the past four years, he had several one-person museum shows in Spain (Barcelona, Logroño and Santander).

 At the occasion of this exhibition Cheim & Read announces the publication of Luz Aislada (meaning "isolated light") a portfolio of fifteen cibachrome photographs from the years 1977 to 1997 by Juan Uslé presented in a cloth bound case with a text by Rainer Crone. Produced in an edition of twenty sets with five lettered artist's proof sets, it is exclusively available through Cheim & Read, New York.
